Have you ever read something that just pleased you? Thrilled you? Made you want to read more?
Generally speaking in this editing game, I can find something good in every submission. It takes a lot of courage to put words on the page and more, to send them off for someone else to comment on. To that end, I think it’s important to point out the good, even in a rejection. A little encouragement doesn’t cost anyone after all.
But editors like to find that story that surprises them and makes them say ‘oh, this is going to be *good*’. The books that you talk about and tell people about long before they ever see a release date.
I found one today. I just hope the author agrees to the contract because, believe me, it’s going to be *good*.

Do you know the difference between riffled and rifled?
He rifled through the desk drawer.
vs.
He riffled through the pages of a book.
No? I didn’t either until today when I came across the latter in an author’s manuscript.
For the curious, dictionary.com defines them as the following:
riffle: to turn hastily; flutter and shift. It’s a combination of ripple and ruffle.
rifle: to ransack and rob
The things we learn.
I’m also amused by the fact that deviant and defiant are only one letter apart.

Hello, hello. I’ve finally decided to make use of the blog I set up ages ago. I considered, briefly, doing one of those anonymous editor blogs where people try to guess who I am and figure out the sort of things I like or don’t like. I decided that was too much work.
Though I won’t be using a clever pseudonym to disguise myself, I also won’t be giving away details about upcoming projects or dishing on authors, either mine or anyone else’s. That’s not what this blog is about. This is to share my occasional opinion on writing, editing and what’s new and hot in the reading world.
I will warn up front that this won’t be a blog that gets updated daily. I’ll do my best to get here once a week or so, or more often when my authors have releases or there’s something exciting going on in the editing world that I just can’t keep quiet about, but mostly, this is a curiosity. Somewhere to stop in every now and then and say hi.
So that’s that. My name is Sarah. I edit for Samhain Publishing, and this is my journey.
